This book started strong and kept on going. There wasn’t a single moment where I was bored.
About the Book
“Kill Grant Anderson – that was the order Lucas Green received from his client, cartel boss Carlos Guerra. It’s a simple command, but Lucas’s work is anything but simple. He is a specialist assassin with a unique skill: orchestrating deaths to appear as accidents. Crashed cars, overdoses, and road rage are just a few of the tricks he keeps up his sleeve.
Grant Anderson is new to Las Vegas, but making a fresh start isn’t easy when he discovers that everything his Uncle Paul Sherman left him in his will is a disaster. A house piled to the ceiling with trash, a failing real estate business, and the loneliness of being across the country from his entire family make things look bleak for Grant.
Meanwhile, newly minted Las Vegas Detective Tracy Cook launches an off-the-books investigation into her former real estate agent, the recently deceased Paul Sherman. His ties to the cartels are subtle, but she knows they are real, even if no one else believes her. This investigation brings her face to face with Grant Anderson and his new neighbor, Lucas Green.
In this perilous thriller, it’s a race against the clock and each other. Who will come out on top – the Detective, the Real Estate Agent, the Assassin, or the Drug Dealer?
My Thoughts
I’m not a gambler, but neither are any of the characters in this story really. I enjoy how it shows a completely different side of Las Vegas. It’s like a story idea I have to show different sides of New Orleans. Everyone thinks the Strip when they think of Vegas, and the French Quarter/Bourbon Street when they think of New Orleans. I know from personal experience that New Orleans has so much more to offer. I’m sure that’s true of Vegas, too!
Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a character I didn’t like – except the “bad guys,” in charge. The ethics in this one were a bit complex, with one of our main characters being a bad guy, but somehow still being a little loveable. Unless that was just me. At which point I’ll just show myself out. Heh.
I’ve never been to Vegas, and I haven’t read or watched much about Vegas before until the past year – and this is the fifth book I’ve read related to Vegas. Intriguingly I have real-life connections – I have some family that I’ve never met yet that live there! Feels a little karmic, like the world is telling me something.
The cover is super cute and I’d definitely pick it up in the store to see what it’s about. I love a multiple POV book. This one almost stretched the limit, but I was just able to keep up with all the characters.
Question of the Day
Have you ever spent time at a casino?
Answer of the Day
I’ve been twice. Once for my bachelorette party when my friends took me. I didn’t like it. We got incredibly drunk, and to this day I still think I saw Jason Dohring, the guy who played Logan in Veronica Mars, and he bought me a drink. I’m sure it was a doppelganger, but… The other time was at a Christmas party in downtown New Orleans. The cheapest place to park was in the Casino parking lot if you played for 30 minutes or if you won a bunch of money. We managed to play penny slots for the whole time and only spent 2 or 3 dollars.
Who’s It For?
If you love a fast-paced, intriguing thriller, this is a great read for you. It’s got dark comedy, intrigue, organized crime, a whip-smart lady detective, and an equally smart villain/killer. But, of course, there’s an awesome twist, so if that’s your jam, pick this one up today!
