Blurb
DCI MacGillivray derailed PM Peterson’s Project Deadhead.
And an unknown party has launched nukes into space permanently destroying comms satellites and sparking a mini-ice age.
She also wants the country’s hero, MacGillivray, to be the poster boy to roll out the Peel Bots. And, with her leverage over him, she is sure he will dance to her tune.
Is MacGillivray just a powerless puppet? Or does he have a trick or two up his sleeve to take the fight to Peterson and her NSSA force?
My Thoughts
This series definitely feels like it could be called something like the detectives at the end of the world. It’s very apocalyptic, dystopian, and also very classic, noir detective story at the same time. This sequel to the first Project Deadhead is action-packed from the word go, when someone decides to blow up satellites in space – and everyone really isn’t sure who did it and why. Which is really impressive, because it feels like it would be impossible for someone to pull that off right now – much less in a future world, but the author manages to explain it well.
The author continues the beautiful, complex, and eerie/dark world building begun in the first book, which if you haven’t read yet, I highly recommend. We get more of a view of the dystopian future world that is similar to our own, but seems to have gained some tech and lost others. It is a very interesting imagining of what the world might look like if we keep on our current trajectory. And the author does not shy away from making his point clear – clean up your acts (mostly concerning climate change, or else!). You can catch my review of Book 1 here.
I never recommend books, be read out of order – but this especially feels like one that wouldn’t make sense without reading the first. The MC Detective MacGillivray continued to earn my affection, something he didn’t fully earn until the end of book 1. His side kicks – or supporting cast – almost always had it. I tend to really enjoy casts of supporting characters, the quirkier the better, and this book had a good group. They worked together well, and made for a believable police force, at least based on what I’ve seen on TV and read in books.
The actual mystery relied heavily on information from the first book, which is why I suggest reading the first one. I’ve really enjoyed this series so far, and hope to see more. I am grateful to the author and LBT for including me in this tour!
