My Thoughts
I am not surprised often – though writers today are doing it more often so I might have to stop saying that – but this author shocked me! I absolutely did not expect the huge twist at the end. I read this in 24 hours and was glued to my reader needing to know what was going to happen.
The main character was a whip smart lawyer, experiencing one of the worst things most people ever do – grief. Worse, the loss of her mother, when she’d already lost her father years before. Most people, until they’re much older, don’t understand the loss of one parent, much less both. Having this connection with the protagonist really made the book come alive for me. If you haven’t lost one of your parent’s it’s a loss different from any others. The author portrayed this loss well, and doing so alongside the other familial interactions she was forced to undergo, the author potrayed amazing characterization. The constant paranoia, slight disconnection, and overall desire for this to not be true was so raw and real.
The other characters were so well done. I suspected pretty much everyone – even the MC, with her memory loss – at some point, which I could tell was exactly what the author was going for. If you’ve ever seen Broadchurch, it had a similar vibe to that – where everyone was a suspect. The setting was also very atmospheric. I could feel the heat and storms. The cringy, uncomfortable family atmosphere also jumped off the page.
Overall, it was a fantastic, domestic thriller and I can’t wait to read more by Melanie Price in the future. I realized another of her books is already on my TBR, I just have to find some time. I am so grateful to the author and Love Books Tours for including me on this tour, and I look forward to many more books by Ms. Price.
