There were so many twists and turns, and when I thought I’d had it figured out there were new surprises.
About the Book
A superstar couple’s double homicide accidentally casts their personal assistant into a real-life Mission Impossible.
Every day without fail Laney Marrs slips on a little black dress, grabs her fake Fendi purse, and drives her beat-up Volkswagen to toil for Hollywood elites. As a personal assistant, she’s a therapist, dog walker, and toilet bowl cleaner. She puts up with it all by keeping her eye on the prize: selling her first screenplay.
But somehow waking up in a hotel room next to her famous boss isn’t part of the plan. Nor is being accused of his and his wife’s brutal murder hours later.
Resolved to clear her name, Laney discovers a shocking tale. Someone in Tinseltown may be a courier for foreign agents in search of government secrets. Below the pedestal of celebrity culture lies a clandestine operation and conspiracy of national significance. This dutiful underling now learns she’s the lead in her own terrifying thriller—where the stakes are nothing less than worldwide Armageddon.
If you love mystery, suspense, and multiple twists read The Assistant.
My Thoughts
This is a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat thriller that is almost impossible to put down. I finished in just a couple of days, around a super busy schedule, because I needed to know what was happening next! It was an easy read, with a digestible plot, and twists at every turn.
Now, I couldn’t find out where Ms. Fawn, the author, lived. I tried. Because I want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, since I can’t for a fact say she’s not from New Orleans, I guess I can’t be too upset. But I assumed based on the description that the book was set in Los Angeles. So when from page one we were in New Orleans, I was a little confused. Then, when we had corrupt cops, I got a little defensive. Do I know that Louisiana is infamous for corrupt officials? Obviously. Do I think it’s okay for non-Louisianians to write about it? Not really. So, I have some mixed feelings about this.
I enjoyed the character development. I believed in the characters, their struggles, and their interactions. Our main character was – as more than one other character pointed out – a little unbelievable, but in certain ways that I don’t want to spoil. The storyline, upon reflection, is also a little far-fetched. There are just a few too many coincidences, but then maybe orchestrated incidents don’t count as coincidences. But the writing was so engaging and exciting, as a good thriller should be, that my belief was suspended properly, and I didn’t notice until well after I finished writing and was thinking back on the story. And, obviously, it was a good story because it kept me thinking about
it.
I will absolutely look for more books by Ms. Fawn, and look for new writing by her. I am thankful to the author and Love Books Tours for including me on this tour.
Who’s It For?
Anyone who loves a good, twisty thriller that will keep you turning the page and needing to know what happens next will love this book. There’s a little bit of everything – romance, intrigue, friendship, sisterhood, murder, infidelity, and so much more!

About the Author
Bonny Fawn is an Emerita Professor of Business and suspense author. Over twenty-five years in academia her work often includes reviewing organizational cases—some of which contained layers of fraud and intriguing workplace liaisons. It’s all perfect grist for the mill for her fiction writing. Truth can be stranger than fiction.
Bonny spends her days thinking up more twisted plot lines, often influenced by real events, and walking her rescue dog, Mr. Kirby, who is beyond reproach. He turns up his nose at liars and cheats. Of course, Bonny doesn’t have the heart to tell him she wouldn’t have much to write about without them.
