About the Book

Fifteen years ago, Melody Brooks found herself at the center of a scandalous murder accusation involving her husband. As the anniversary of his tragic death approaches, Melody’s daughter is about to marry at a luxurious resort in Northern Minnesota. But what should be a joyous occasion quickly turns into a nightmare for the mother of the bride.

To add to the drama, Melody’s daughter surprises her by arranging for Melody’s old friend and confidant, Matthias Ford, to join the festivities. With Matthias by her side, Melody feels a sense of reassurance…until an unexpected incident involving the best man casts a troubling spotlight on her past and her possible connection to her husband’s demise.

Meanwhile, Detective Josephine, on a well-deserved vacation with her new fiancé, finds herself drawn into the incident at their accommodations and soon back in the proverbial saddle.

At this destination wedding gone awry, countless dark secrets involving the wedding party will unearthed before the truth is revealed.

My Thoughts

I’ve been along the ride so far for all of Det. Josephine Kelly’s story has been quite a ride so far. I really enjoy how each book has its own unique story, even while weaving in a few familiar characters, themes, and atmospheric elements.

Having read a few of Quinn Avery’s books, I’m also quite impressed by her breadth! She writes dynamic characters and has explored a number of different types of stories and human experiences! Honestly, both times, I’ve been knee-deep in the Det. Kelly sequels before I realized they were sequels. Some might think that is not good, but I think it means she brings a fresh perspective to each book in the series. Sometimes, you go to a series because you know exactly what you’re going to get, and it’s cozy and warm. That’s not what you get here, and when I pick up one of Avery’s books, I’m here for it!!

She is also amazing at creating scenarios that I both love and hate in thrillers, where I can’t figure out who to like or trust. It’s such a fun and uncomfortable experience. And it really reminds you how tenuous life and relationships are around you. Maybe that’s why we read books like this. I know I keep coming back for something, and I will absolutely keep coming back for (author’s) books whenever she puts them out.

I’m so grateful to the author and LBT for including me in this tour, and I can’t wait to read what comes next!!

Who’s It For?

If you love Quinn Avery’s books, then this should be an instant buy! You should also check it out if you love thrillers with mind-mending twists and surprises around every corner and if you’re a fan of shows like Broadchurch where you can’t trust anyone!! Of course, like with many stories like this, there are a lot of serious topics, so definitely check your trigger warnings!

Content Warnings: There are several issues broached in this story, including, but not limited to, Drug/Alcohol Abuse, Murder, Mental Illness, Serial Unaliving, Sexual Assualt, Classism, Gambling, Addiction, Betrayal, Child Harm/Abandonment.

Question of the Day

Have you ever been to a destination wedding?

Answer of the Day

In a way, my own wedding. At the time, I lived more than two hours from my hometown. I didn’t even want a big to-do, but I was my mom’s only child, and she insisted you got married in the girl’s hometown. In-laws, friends, and colleagues all lived hours away. But the destination was a tiny town in Louisiana. So, it wasn’t exactly a “destination wedding” per se.
