Buckle up for a magical, utopian galactic ride that manages super spicy, extra romantic, and extremely sweet all at once.
About the Book
Life has its hard knocks but after aging out of the foster system Kayla and Brooke are finding adulting brutal. Kayla has a hard time keeping steady employment.
Being an empath who can pick up on evil intentions makes you a bit confrontational. When Kayla and Brooke stumble through a God Portal to another planet, they must survive together as they battle a vampire who’s caused catastrophic devastation to the planet. In this paranormal romance, the two earth females have a fate to face on a doomed planet while dealing with the unruly antics of the Gods.
Will Kayla’s protective spirit and Brooke’s faith be enough to save not only themselves but the people of Harmony’s world or will they be destroyed alongside them?
My Thoughts
The bonds built in this story are a big focus. The initial bond between our two main female characters, Kayla and Brooke, is strong, forged in the brutal fires of the foster care system. Both have trauma surrounding their childhood and experiences in the system, especially since they have psychic powers, making them targets for bullying. Kayla has it especially bad because she is telepathic and can feel others thoughts or intentions and it makes it very difficult for her to be around people. When our heroines arrive on another planet, they form instant love bonds with “true love mates.” While this isn’t a trope I’m a big fan of, the author at least made it make sense in the context, so it was something I found cute and believable in this world. I also appreciated that both women resisted and made jokes about it the whole time.
I really appreciated the world building in this story. Fantasy stories always require a lot of heavy lifting in world building, and the author delivered. She built a beautifully complex world with a complicated and tragic backstory. I also appreciated that because the girls were no-nonsense Earth girls barely out of high school that their language was very different from that of their other-worldly counterparts. The interactions and the differences were clear and made for some humorous banter.
I enjoyed the building of family bonds and the author’s work to show the various family and community building. While the story line, like so many fantasy story lines, definitely required a great deal of suspension of disbelief, the sense of community and comradeship was beautiful and believable. I enjoyed the various characters. Honestly, if Hallmark did paranormal stories, the whole thing had a sweet, wholesome feel to it, except that the love scenes had an extremely spicy level to them. I also really appreciated that the story included diverse relationship representation, showing a world accepting of gay and polyamorous relationships.
I am very grateful to the author and Love Books Tours for being included on this tour. I received a physical ARC copy of the book. I know they are usually edited again, and I do hope it did receive a good bit of editing after this copy. If not and you are bothered by typos, my copy did have quite a few, so you might prefer an ebook.
Who’s it For
Those who prefer sweet, but very spicy paranormal romances, filled with action and adventure will love this story.
Content Warning: I always appreciate when the author includes their own content warning, which this author does. She notes that the story is for adults only – which is absolutely true because it is extremely spicy. Other content warnings include violence, childbirth, blood, kidnapping, childhood trauma, gore, graphic sex, abusive relationships, and religious iconography.
