This series – and OC Heaton’s writing – just gets better as it keeps going. While some series wane as they continue, this one continues to get more exciting.
About the Book

Old faces. New masks.
July 2014. Nine billion LEAP gates power a cleaner planet, lining the pockets of the wealthy few — but decimating the job market, leaving millions without hope.
Holed up in Hofdi House, Iceland, Uma Jakobsdóttir sinks into despair — forever haunted by Ethan’s selfless sacrifice and regretting her decision to have his children. Until she discovers traces of plastic toxins in their bloodstreams, and her pursuit of an environmental panacea returns with a vengeance.
As LEAP deniers fight back, Uma’s mission is complicated by Ethan’s lingering presence wherever she turns. And as a series of gruesome murders threatens to overturn her sanity, Uma can come to only one conclusion: there is more than coincidence at work here.
For Ethan, it seems, death is no barrier to revenge…
My Thoughts
Somehow, Heaton manages to come up with more and more complex political and ethical issues from the creation of his fascinating science fiction creation. While he’s far from the first to come up with the idea of teleportation, I haven’t personally seen it explored in such depth on a human level. I feel like entire ethics and philosophy classes could be taught from these books!
Uma was not a lovable character in this particular book, but sometimes our heroes have to hit rock bottom before their meteoric rise. Which is what I’m hoping for. There are supposed to be more books in this series, so let’s hope for some redemption.
The thrilling storyline and twists that don’t truly reveal themselves until the last moments are beautiful craftsmanship. The planning and hard work Heaton puts into writing is so evident. As a fellow author, it is so impressive! And he writes such a variety of characters so well, and without spoilers, he adds so many layers to characters that really show his skill. And that doesn’t even get into all the space and time jumping because of the LEAP gates.
Also, I’m so grateful to the author and LBT for including me in this readalong! I can’t wait for book 5!
Who’s It For?
If you enjoy techno thrillers with complex sociopolitical and ethical implications, this is a winner! The writing is great, and I can’t wait to see where the exciting events of this book take us in the next one! This book contains some intense, serious topics as it explores an interesting speculative technology that attempts to solve the climate crisis. As always, practice care and consider the content warnings provided.
Content Warnings: The author has graciously included his own content warnings (quite a winner in my book!), and I agree with them. They include, but are not guaranted to be limited to, alcoholism, blackmail, cancer, childbirth, dead bodies, death of a partner, existential crisis, gang r@pe, gun violence, homelessness, impersonation, kidnapping, loss of limb, manmade disasters, mass murd3r, post natal depression, religious fantaicism, revenge p)rnography, riots, s3xual assault, s3x work, sword violence, torutre, terrorism, and whipping.
