Follow The Twists, Turns to a Shocking Conclusion
I thought I knew what was happening. The story was wrapping up all nice and neat, and then the rug was pulled out from under me in an absolutely stunning and shocking finish.
About the Book
When a young woman falls to her death from a luxury London apartment, Poppy Taylor’s world is turned upside down.
Because the prime suspect isn’t just anyone: it’s ex-boyfriend Elliot Gardner, the charming millionaire and social-media influencer who introduced her to a life of holiday villas, designer handbags, and first-class plane tickets.
But Poppy knows all about the real Elliot. The gas-lighting. The abuse. And she knows that he’ll do anything to walk free.
To stop him, she’ll have to confront her past – and the memories she’s been running from – to relive it all; from first falling for Elliot’s charming advances, to discovering his darker side, and the breakdown of a relationship which left her reputation and her life in pieces.
After all, men like Elliot always get away with it. Don’t they?
My Thoughts
So, I’m not sure if I really liked any of the characters in this book. And, in the end, I’m not sure if I was supposed to. I feel like that could have been part of the point, like an exploration of the fakeness that has taken over society as part of the perpetuation of social media. This book manages to explore a lot of big issues in society from PTSD to relationship abuse and the sex trade to the issues surrounding social media. The author did a great job of providing social commentary on these various issues and I’m left with unease and a lot to think about.
The twists and turns in this book will leave you reeling right up until the end. I thought I had everything figured out only to have it all changed up on me in the last minute. This is a fine execution of an unreliable narrator, and I applaud the author’s use of this storytelling method. The story jumps back and forth between timelines and places, and it’s easy to keep up even without chapter heads telling you when and where we are.
The relationships within this book are great, even though the majority of them are surface-level. I would normally not enjoy that, but it feels like the author did this on purpose – a further commentary on how surface-level so many relationships have become in this modern age, where we have thousands of “friends” and no real friends. Even the familial relationships suffer from a similar fate within this story, with Poppy’s parents preferring their children’s flashy partners over their own children.
Using a thriller to explore these social issues is a great use of the genre, and I appreciate the author’s work. I look forward to reading more from him again in the future. I am grateful to the author and Love Books Tours for including me on this tour.
Who’s It For
This is a fine thriller with an unreliable narrator and great twists. It deals with some sensitive matters, so consider your triggers before reading. It is not appropriate for sensitive/young readers. It is a thrilling, fast-paced read, and it is a smart, deep exploration of several social issues.
Content Warnings: Relationship Abuse, PTSD, Unplanned Pregnancy, Discussion of Abortion, Sex Trafficking
