Join Sabre Brown for a twisty, high-octane legal thriller that’ll keep you turning pages from start to finish.

About the Book

The Killer left nothing behind but a rosary, a kitchen knife, and a dead man. but the dead man is a friend of Sabre Orin Brown. When his unsuspecting wife is accused of the murder, Sabre will stop at nothing to uncover the truth, even if it means unearthing chilling secrets. From a San Diego jail to the shady Chicago nightlife, Sabre’s search for the true killer forces her to face the question: What do you do when the ones you trust the most are the ones with the most to hide?

My Thoughts

So, I was able to figure out whodunnit in this one about 60% in, but some fantastic red herrings almost threw me off. I enjoyed the challenge, and I love reading a good mystery that almost stumps me as much as one that does. Besides, there’s always the why or some other complicated issue that comes out in the end.

Also, most of us aren’t showing up for the hard stuff. Some people, probably a good population even. I enjoy the cat and mouse sleuthing game. But the human element is what truly keeps us coming back for 15 seasons or 20 books, right? It’s why we pick up the next book in the series instead of a different crime book. And Sabre is an excellent character to follow. She’s smart, and emotionally vulnerable, but also a little wounded, trying to get her life together, and she is fierce. She will fight for the kids she represents and for the people she loves just as hard.

The cast of characters supporting her are equally loveable and I look forward to seeing those relationships growing. I haven’t really read any legal thrillers before this one – I only really started reading thrillers last year – so I’m not very familiar with the genre. This one feels almost like a cozy crossover. It checks off many of the cozy boxes: whip-smart non-detective/cop sleuth, incompetent cops, and an awesome cast of supporting characters. It’s just a little darker and the heroine has an overarching goal – finding her brother.

I’m so grateful to the author and Love Books Tours for including me in the tour, and I’m excited to read the next one!
