If you love a good detective book, especially one with great twists and sometimes dark humor, you absolutely need to read this series. Fog of Silence is the third installment of the Luke Sackville thriller series by SJ Richards.
About the Book
Luke and his team investigate goings-on at GNE, a global news and entertainment company, after a whistleblower asks for their help. They are shocked by what they uncover but executives refuse to act, even when it becomes apparent there have been deaths that are unaccounted for. A serial killer is taking advantage of the culture of secrecy and no one is safe.
My Thoughts
It’s really fun to read a series focused on a different kind of detective hero. But I’d start with book one: Taken to the Hills! I’m always a big fan of starting from the beginning, but I think this is one of those stories that you can technically read standalone. I’m really not a good judge of that – but I think it’s okay? You will definitely miss out on some of the nuance of the characters, and I personally think that would be sad, because the characters absolutely make the series. Each book shows them growing more into their roles, and the authors writing just gets better.
The dark, thrilling parts get darker, and the funny parts get funnier. I think every review I see mentions Josh, and if the author didn’t mean for that to happen, he’s an accidental genius – because Josh is one of those absolutely adorable, bumbling sidekicks that you just want to squeeze and hold tight like a teddy. But he also gets his job done, and you imagine he’s really cute in a nerdy kind of way – even though he is decidedly not nerdy, I just imagine he looks it for some reason.
We’ve got a bit of a love triangle going in this book, to add some tension. The romance hasn’t been utilized much in this series, it’s going to be a true #slowburn, but I’m okay with that. Some of us survived watching Bones, for heaven’s sake. So I can wait for the pay off, as long it comes.
Can’t wait for the next one, set for May! I am so grateful to the author and Love Books Tour for including me in this tour, and I’ll keep reading this series as long as the author keeps churning them out with adorable scenes featuring Josh and thrilling scenes featuring the team.
Question of the Day
Have you ever met a famous person?
Who’s It For?
I’ve always loved writing but have only really had the time to indulge myself since taking early retirement. My daughter is a brilliant author (I’m not biased of course) which is both an inspiration and – because she’s so good – a challenge. After a few experiments, and a couple of completed but unsatisfactory and never published novels, I decided to write a crime fiction series as it’s one of the genres I most enjoy. The series does cover some dark and disturbing topics, so please view the content warnings.
Content Warnings: Pedophilia (Late Teens), SA, Assault, Murder, Torture, Coma, Medical Setting, Infidelity, Parental Death, Spousal Death, Dementia/Alzheimer’s, Adoption, Blended Families, Adult Situations, Adult Language
About the Author
Let’s get one thing straight: my name’s Steve. I’ve never been called ‘SJ’ but Steve Richards is a political writer hence the pen name.
I was born in Bath and have lived at various times on an irregular clockwise circle around England. After university in Manchester my wife and I settled in Macclesfield before moving to Bedfordshire then a few years ago back to Somerset. We now live in Croscombe, a lovely village just outside Wells, with our 2 sprightly cocker spaniels.
